Join us for a guided tour led by art historian Erwin Kessler in the exhibition dedicated to Ion Țuculescu – the greatest Romanian modernist artist, internationally renowned. In an intimate and privileged setting, you will follow the artistic journey of a creator who was also a doctor, biologist, and researcher, in the largest retrospective exhibition of the last 50 years.
“The Țuculescu case” is unique in Romanian art: he was a renowned scientist and, at the same time, the most innovative and influential post-war painter. The emergence of Țuculescu is connected to the unprecedented cultural effervescence of the interwar period.
The fate of Țuculescu’s work changed posthumously, in 1965, with the political reorientation of the country. Emancipated by Soviet Imperialism, the Communist regime in Romania opened two new, complementary ideological fields, detached from Proletarian Culture: the internationalist opening towards modern Western culture and the drilling into the local, national, perennial tradition. As a matter of course, at the crossroads of these two opposing directions there was only one name: Ion Țuculescu, a progressive scientist and creative genius who was subjectively incorporated into the national folklore.
60 years after the crucial 1965 exhibition held at Dalles Hall, Art Safari undertook, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, a comprehensive revision and perhaps reconsideration of the work of the titan of the beginnings of Romanian contemporary art, bringing together over 100 representative works from the most important museums and private collections in the country.
The exhibition is curated by Cristian Vechiu, with the accompaniment of Erwin Kessler, featuring an exhibition architecture designed by Cosmin Florea and by the aé02 architectural office (Elena Viziteu and Anda Zota).
